Twin Valley – Internet Speed Tests

Ever wondered if your WiFi is actually as speedy as your internet provider claims? That’s where internet speed tests come in—these easy-to-use online tools can help you figure out what’s up with your WiFi and whether it’s living up to its full potential. And the best part? You can test your speeds, troubleshoot your connection, and test your WiFi strength in different rooms of your home, all in mere minutes. Learn more as our team at Twin Valley details everything you need to know about internet speed tests and discover how you can make them work for your home!

What Is an Internet Speed Test?

Think of an internet speed test as a health check for your connection. It’s a tool that measures the performance of your internet connection by evaluating your download speed, upload speed, and ping (latency). Not sure what those metrics signify? Let’s take a closer look!

  • Download Speed

The rate at which data is transferred from the internet to your device, measured in megabits per second (Mbps). A higher download speed is crucial for activities like streaming movies, downloading files, and browsing social media. (In short, the higher the Mbps, the smoother your Netflix binge!)

  • Upload Speed

The rate at which data is sent from your device to the internet, also measured in Mbps. This is important for tasks like video conferencing, uploading files, and sharing content online. (The higher the upload speeds, the more likely you can join a Zoom call without lag!)

  • Ping (Latency)

The time it takes for a small amount of data to travel from your device to a server and back, measured in milliseconds (ms). (Gamers, this one’s for you—a low ping means less rage-quitting!)

Benefits of Conducting Regular Speed Tests

Now that you know what an internet speed test is, why should you care? For starters, running regular speed tests can ensure you’re getting what you’re paying for! Not to mention, you may be able to save yourself time by troubleshooting problems at home, and you’ll always know when it’s time to upgrade. Some of the most notable benefits include:

  • Verifying Your Plan

By running regular speed tests, you can check to see if your internet service provider (ISP) is delivering the speeds you’re paying for. While several outside factors can affect your internet speeds, such as network congestion, weak signal strength, and physical device limitations (outdated equipment, etc.), running regular speed tests can give you a glimpse into how your internet is performing. If you regularly run into issues with low download and upload speeds and high ping, it may be time to contact your service provider to discuss the recurring issues.

  • Troubleshooting Issues

If you’re experiencing delays or unreliable connections, a speed test may be able to offer quick insight into what’s actually causing the problem. By providing a measurable data point, an internet speed test can help pinpoint potential issues, which you can compare across different devices and locations in your home. This will help you determine whether the issue is with a specific device, a location in your home with a weak signal, or your internet speed in general!

  • Optimizing Performance

Always know when it’s time to upgrade your plan or your equipment by performing regular speed tests. If you constantly find yourself running into issues with slow speeds, it may be time to level up your connection!

How To Run an Internet Speed Test

Good news for you; running a speed test is quick and easy—there’s no tech degree required. Follow these simple steps to get started:

  • Choose a reliable online tool

The easiest way to conduct an accurate speed test is by using Twin Valley’s Command IQ app! Simply open your app, tap into “My Network,” and then choose the “Bandwidth Test” icon. *Some additional, user-trusted options include Speedtest by Ookla, Fast.com by Netflix, and Google’s built-in speed test.

  • Prepare your device.

For accurate results, close any applications or downloads that might be using your internet connection, as this could affect your speeds.

  • Connect to your network.

Make sure to use the same connection you want to test, whether it’s WiFi or a wired Ethernet connection.

  • Start the test.

Click the “Go” or “Start” button and let the speed test do its thing!

Once the test is complete, you’ll see three numbers—your download speed, upload speed, and ping. If you notice particularly slow download or upload speeds (25 Mbps or lower), you may need to restart your router or check any connected devices that may be using excessive bandwidth. If the issue persists, contact your internet service provider to get assistance troubleshooting your connection.
