If you want to connect more than one device to the Internet or connect wirelessly, you’ll want both a modem and a router. While the two look similar, they have different functions in delivering Internet service.
A modem connects to wiring and brings Internet into your home or business. It will only connect to one device – such as a computer – using another wire. Without a modem, you’d have no Internet connection.
To connect multiple devices to the Internet wirelessly, you’ll also need a router. A router connects to your modem and broadcasts the Internet signal to all your devices – such as computers, tablets, mobile phones, and TVs. A router also protects against hackers by providing built-in security.
